Ordered This case to protect my surface, as I like the notion of protecting my electronics in general. First thing, the case definitely adds weight and bulk. Not a huge amount, but you notice it when holding just the clipboard. Installation was easy enough, and there are vent holes in the cover to let in air to the clipboard. I’ll report back if I get overheating issues like other reviewers.

The one thing that bugs me A LOT in the first day of use is how the hinge cover works. It’s a flexible piece of plastic with a metal rod in in for support, that covers the hinge and touches the back of the clipboard. However, if you remove the clipboard, the hinge cover moves forward and blocks you from plugging the clipboard back in. The easiest way I have found to reconnect the two is to set the clipboard down, physically bend the hinge cover back so it catches on the physical hinge and then reconnect the clipboard. Not the easiest thing to do, and during the period of bending the case on the keyboard gets very distorted. But I can’t figure out another way. One hand does not provide enough force/leverage to move the blocking piece of plastic out of the way without causing the metal bar to slip out of the plastic. I mean, the protection is good if you want to store the keyboard in a bag while using the clipboard, but it is still annoying.

I’ve included lots of photos talking about the specific problem I am experiencing. I might have less difficulty with it as time goes on, we will see.

Protection of your surface book comes at a huge cost to heat dissipation with this cover., January 17, 2017

The cover itself is rigid and adds quite a bit of heft and thickness to the upper and lower halves so it provides some protection, although I wouldn’t say that it could survive a drop on a corner.

The major flaw in the design is that over a third of the vents are blocked when this case is attached. More importantly all of the top vents (where the pen is attached) are 100% blocked. No air flow in the area where heat would naturally rise out of and dissipate from. For me, this causes my surface book to freeze often and the fan to run at full speed more frequently. The side vents also lose some air flow due to the design of the vents in the case resulting in additional loss of air flow. It would’ve been better if the top and bottom cover also had cut-outs in the panel to allow heat to pass through the flat surfaces of the surface book.

Minor annoyance is that the UAG logo is huge and chromed and cheapens the look of your nice and sleek surface book

This cover is two parts — one side fits the keyboard, the other side fits the tablet/screen. Neither fits my surfacebook perfectly. For the tablet side, the cover slides down over top. If it is seated all the way, the fan ports are covered and the machine runs hot. I left a small gap when I installed the cover and it seems to work as a compromise between protection and functionality.

I have the performance model of the surface book which came out in November 2016. it is a little thicker than the regular surfacebook and the sd card reader is also offset by about 1/8″ from the regular surfacebook. These small differences mean that the plastic cover doesn’t snap onto the keyboard. I filed a little plastic away so the sd card reader has access. I will use double stick tape or some Velcro to adhere the cover to machine. This isn’t an otterbox with its water-resistant case and screen protector, but it probably is the best thing out there for now.
